Student Spotlight: Maria's Journey from Recipient to Volunteer
Maria Rodriguez remembers the day she first discovered World Food Movement's meal distribution on campus. As a first-generation college student working two part-time jobs, she often had to choose between buying textbooks and buying food.
A Helping Hand
"I was embarrassed at first," Maria recalls. "But the volunteers were so welcoming, and the food was delicious. It wasn't like charity - it felt like community."
From Recipient to Leader
After a semester of receiving meals, Maria felt compelled to give back. She started volunteering on weekends, helping prepare and distribute meals to her fellow students.
Two years later, Maria now leads a team of 25 volunteers at her campus. She's also pursuing a degree in Social Work, inspired by her experiences with WFM.
"WFM didn't just feed my body - they nourished my spirit and showed me what community really means. Now I get to do that for others."
Maria's Message to Students
"If you're struggling, please don't be afraid to ask for help. And if you're in a position to help, even a few hours of volunteering can make a huge difference in someone's life."
